Participatory Action Research (PAR)

Short Definition
A research approach that involves participants actively in the research process, aiming to address issues within their communities while generating actionable solutions. It combines inquiry with activism for social change.
Relevance
PAR promotes intersectional tech design by involving communities directly affected by technology. However, the challenge is ensuring underresourced communities have the time, resources, and access to fully engage. The opportunity lies in creating tech projects that are truly community-driven and not just tokenistic. A hopeful way forward includes building cooperative partnerships where PAR principles ensure community voices drive decision-making throughout the development process.
