Indigenous data sovereignty (IDS)

Short Definition
Indigenous Data Sovereignty is a movement that advocates for a nation's right to govern the collection, ownership, and application of its own data. It requires data governance to gain better information that could lead to better decisions. Softwares that support Indigenous Data Sovereignty need to be practical, easy-to-use, and transformative for communities and organizations.
Relevance
Emphasizes Indigenous control over data and knowledge, challenging ongoing exploitation. IDS can reshape data governance if systems are restructured to truly respect community autonomy. However, there is the risk that existing power structures will continue to undermine these efforts.
