new media

Short Definition
New Media refers to a broad spectrum of communicative technologies, platforms, and methods that are continually evolving. In art, it is broadly understood as a genre that combines considerations of art and technology. The word “new” in “new media” can encompass: 1. New and emergent technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) or blockchain, that redefine how we interact with the digital world. 2. New and emergent methods within existing technologies, like innovative uses of social media or video editing tools. 3. Newly popularized technologies, which may have existed but are gaining widespread use, like live-streaming or AI-driven content creation. 4. Pursuit of the popularization of marginalized technologies, where underrepresented or lesser-known tech developed by or for marginalized communities is brought into broader use.
Relevance
New media offers opportunities to challenge traditional media frameworks, create culturally specific content, and amplify the voices of those historically excluded from mainstream platforms, making it a powerful tool for digital storytelling and activism.
