information hierarchy

Short Definition
The organization of content in a way that prioritizes its importance or relevance. In digital design, it refers to structuring information so users can easily navigate and understand content, often using headings, subheadings, and formatting.
Relevance
Information hierarchy refers to how content is organized and prioritized. Understanding it helps individuals critically evaluate what content is made most visible in digital spaces and how that impacts accessibility. It is vital for ensuring diverse cultural perspectives are not sidelined or buried. Understanding information hierarchy conventions also helps us to navigate different interfaces and softwares. For example, toolbars are typically located at the top of windows, panels are usually to the left or right of a given screen or window. This is essential for basic and foundational tech literacy.
