This is a research-informed workbook produced by Our Data Bodies (ODB). It includes activities and exercises for community-based workshops on data, surveillance, and community safety. Its aim is to help communities understand how technologies impact people's lives, particularly those who are marginalized.
The playbook focuses on how marginalized communities can critically engage with and reclaim their data, countering harmful surveillance practices and promoting data literacy for community safety.Tech Literacy & Accessibility: Developed by Our Data Bodies, this workbook contains exercises and tools for community workshops on data literacy, surveillance, and community safety, building tech literacy by empowering communities to critically assess technology’s impact on their lives. Reducing Harm in New Media: The playbook challenges exploitative data practices, helping marginalised communities reclaim their data and mitigate risks associated with surveillance. It promotes media literacy around tech-related harms, fostering community resilience and autonomy in the face of data misuse. Data & Knowledge Stewardship: By providing communities with tools to manage and protect their data, the playbook supports a model of data sovereignty, ensuring that communities have resources to reclaim, control, and secure their own data narratives.
