Black Beyond Data is a research project led by Johns Hopkins University. It is focused on centering Black people's experiences and reframing the ways in which the Black experience is examined through data.

Relevance

This project reclaims data narratives around Black lives, offering a model for ethically managing data related to Black communities and centring Black perspectives.Tech Literacy & Accessibility: Led by Johns Hopkins University, this project reframes the Black experience in data through research that centres Black perspectives. By redefining how data is used to represent Black communities, it promotes tech literacy by empowering Black communities to engage with data that reflects their experiences accurately. Reducing Harm in New Media: Black Beyond Data reduces harm by pushing back against data practices that commodify or misrepresent Black lives, instead using research that values Black narratives and experiences. Data & Knowledge Stewardship: The project encourages Black-led control over data concerning Black communities, ensuring that data is managed ethically and that Black perspectives remain at the forefront of this knowledge base.
